Accused teenage chain-snatcher remanded

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle last week remanded to prison a Sophia teen charged with simple larceny.

Orlando Charles, 17, of 34 ‘D’ Field Sophia pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on September 7, on Mandela Avenue, Charles and an accomplice snatched a gold chain valued $29, 000 from Melissa Azore.

Azore told the court that she was awaiting transportation in front of the East La Penitence Police Station when the accused and his accomplice snatched her chain as they walked past her. The woman said she held on to Charles’s jersey as he attempted to flee but was soon forced to loosen her grip on him. The teen then escaped with his fleeing accomplice.

Azore told the court that on September 10, she again saw the accused pointed him out to a police officer who was nearby. Charles was arrested and later charged.

Though the prosecution did not object to bail, Charles was remanded.

He was ordered to appear at court for continuation on September 22.
