Rena Mohamed, 26, of 80 Second Street, Alexander Village appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with simple larceny. She pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to her.

Mohamed admitted that between November 17 and 25 she stole 12 ounces of raw gold worth $2 million from her employer Ganesh Seeram.
According to the prosecution, Mohamed sold the gold and purchased a number of items with the money.
On November 17, Seeram placed the gold in his prayer room and left his home. He returned on November 25 and discovered the gold missing. A report was made to the police who later questioned the maid. Mohamed confessed to the police that she’d stolen the gold and was later charged, the prosecution said.

“My boyfriend pushed me in it,” Mohamed told the court. “Because he wanted the money… I don’t know how much money he wanted or what he wanted it for,” the distressed woman said.

When asked by the magistrate what she’d done with the money Mohamed informed the court that she purchased a number of household appliances. Further, she said that she had only been working with Seeram for one month. “I only got $32,000 left back from the money,” she said.

The magistrate informed Mohamed that the offence carried up to three years imprisonment but she would only give her 18 months.

Enough time to reflect on the boyfriend. Hope he visits her!

  2. Owen UNITED STATES says:

    STEALING BECOMES PROFITABLE.
When Magistrates handle cases like these , they ought to deal with these people
seriously. The manner in which this particular case was handle only encourages
them to steal. 18 months for stealing 2 million dollars?????????????????????
This accused makes more money stealing , than working; and you send her on vacation.Am I missing something??? ” SIMPLE LARCENY”?
Guyana is going deeper , and deeper in the direction of Stealing, rape, murder,
wife and child abusers, and you the the ones who are placed to handle these crimes, treat it so LIGHTLY. All this crime, killing, robberies, abusing, and now we have PIRATES on the war path, is looking very bad for the future of Guyana.
I am watching this situation increasing on a daily basis. What are the leaders doing about all of this? Is the rich gonna get richer? and the poor man suffer as usual. Is’nt about time that we start to think about the poor people of Guyana.
On the other hand “WAS THIS MAID PAID AT LEAST DECENTLY TO DO her JOB”
This surely is another way that encourages stealing.
    Where are the Labour Laws?
Is Guyana still paying maids , gardeners, watchmen,&chauffers, meager pittances they call wages?
I know for a fact that when the rich get together, they talk about how many of these “labourers” they have in their household.
I myself was guilty of this too,; but that was 45 years ago, and this is 2008.
If we are going to change Guyana for betterment, we have to start with ourselves, our homes, our help , “Better WAGES FOR THESE WORKERS”
    They have families to feed.
Maybe, just maybe they wont steal so much.

    • MR.WEST BANK UNITED STATES says:

Very good of you to confess after 45 years, seems as
if you are having sleepless nights in 2008 my friend Owen.

    • Maleka UNITED KINGDOM says:

she confess and i agree with the magistrates decision.hope she ;earns from her mistake.

    • Maleka UNITED KINGDOM says:

why is rape , murder and larceny on the rise…………its not the magistrate my dear friend……do some more research before u bluff your way without facts. It is the government who is wasting taxpayers money whilse they fail to tackle important issues such as unemployment, wages, education and the high increase in crime.

    • President UNITED STATES says:

      Owen:

      Agreed…….Very true and direct words.

We know of your help to Guyana in the millions of dollars.

Make more dollars in the USA and give more to your homelend….forget the politicans and magistrates.

No excuses, the Maid committed a crime..she stole from her employer’s prayer room.

  3. Shelly Belly GUYANA says:

Owen, I do agree with you on the “light sentencing”. I am not sure if this maid was paid or not. But just imagine within one month, she stole $2M. A Theif is a Theif . There is no justification for this, I suppose if you are NOT happy with the job & salary then you have an option to leave, educate yourself, learn a skill & move on.

For me it does not matter how much you pay Housekeeps/maids/babysitters or how well you treat them. Most of them will still steel from your homes, they are career theives. The items varies from Money & jewelley to your children’s clothes. and groceries. There is something wrong with the work ethics of some of the people in Guyana. Yes, you may have a point the rich are getting richer. But this does not justify ” I must theif to get rich as well”. This woman should be made an example to other domestic help, many times people are too busy with their live to run after them & police matters, and so they get off the hook & go on to steel from other employers. Just look at her….she stole the item from the man’s prayer room, see what she bought big stove, Fridge etc…..She wants to get rich fast. They come into your homes and want to live as equal as you are, without realising how much you struggle to get where you are. The boyfriend prompting her, may just be another lame excuse. She has no dignity, at 26 years old, she should be trying to learn a skill, even if she is not educated. Its available for as low as US $25 per course and available in Guyana.

    • Owen Khan UNITED STATES says:

Shelly I agree with you. They only know I way, and that’s to steal.
You know the old saying ” God bless the man who pays wages”
He puts bread on the table for entire family, why should you try to destroy him.
And yes , If you dont like the job, leave it.
She stole from the prayer room, and believe that no one saw her,
      BUT SHE WAS SEEN.

  4. ALL_GT UNITED STATES says:

What happened to the person who bought the gold from her, should that person not be before the court also?

    • Gettho Youth GUYANA says:

Yes all gt, what happen to the people who bought the raw gold from this woman.
They should be charged for recieving stolden property also.
What happend to the items she bought will they beconfiscated and given to Mr. Seeram????????
The judical system is so lacking.
The items should be given to to Seeram, the buyers of the raw gold charged for recieving stolden property, and Ms Rena mader to face the penaly.
She knew damn fully well waht she was doing.

    • Charriot UNITED STATES says:

Did she tell the buyer of the gold that she stole it? I think not. So why should he/she be charged?

  5. Caesar Agustus UNITED STATES says:

If this individual has a brain to be reformed, she should get rid of the boy friend, then agree to pay back the amount plus interest after jail time.

    • Leslyn UNITED STATES says:

Surely you are not sugesting that she pays the money back AFTER doing time for the crime? As for the boyfriend, if it is true that he has a part in this, then he should be held responsible too. As for the employer, I would like to know just how much he was paying this maid. No doubt he is one of the many who get rich off of cheap labor. Do employers ever think that perhaps they should give their employees a reason NOT to steal? It works both ways.

  6. Arnold VENEZUELA says:

The boy friend should be sent to jail also, he’s the author intellectual or no?
A little 18 months for being a thief, happy holiday in the jailhouse, hope that the boy friend would take some fresh ginger beer for you….

    • billp CANADA says:

Arnold you actually believe the COCK and BULL story about the boyfriend putting her up to this. Then how come SHE spent the money buying a new Gas stove, microwave, blender and fridge?

  7. Wiffy ITALY says:

By the time she gets out, the boyfriend would have sold the kitchen et al.

Further, how come the boyfriend wanted the money and she spent it?

    Sheer stupidness.

    • Leslyn UNITED STATES says:

Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Since when does a 26 year old woman HAVE to do what the boyfriend says? Surely she must have a mindc of her own, also after 18 months in jail I doubt she would have a single appliance left in the house. If it is true that the boyfriend made her do it, instead of being responsible for her own actions, then she obviously loves him more than she loves herself. That in and of itself is a shame, because who is the one behind bars now? It is just dreadful that a young woman has to end up like this (we all know no one else is going to employ her ever again) it is Guyana, after all. I do hope she takes the time to reflect on her actions, and try and learn some kind of skill while serving her time.

  8. sanie UNITED STATES says:

the gold was worth 2m, how much did she get for it, her boyfriend should be charged as accomplice, he’s as guilty as she is, even though he didnt actually do the crime

  9. haha UNITED KINGDOM says:

well at least she aint going to jail for stealing some stupid 100 000 or something

  10. lollol UNITED KINGDOM says:

plus with all that money at least move out reak quick….
