Digicel donates Blackberry to women’s hockey team raffle

Digicel once again showed its support for the Guyana Women’s National Hockey Team when it donated a Blackberry Gemini to be used as a prize in an upcoming raffle the team has planned as part of its fundraising activities.

Digicel Sales Manager Dwayne Scott presents a Blackberry Gemini to national women’s hockey team member Avonda James for a fundraising raffle while fellow team member Tricia Fiedtkou and Guyana Hockey Board President Philip Fernandes look on.

National team member Avonda James received the phone on the team’s behalf. James and fellow senior team member Tricia Fiedtkou, who also attended the presentation, said they were grateful to Digicel for their consistent support.

Digicel has been associated with the team as far back as 2005 when the company operated as U-Mobile Inc. According to Digicel Sales Manager, Dwayne Scott, the company recognises the efforts of the national hockey ladies team and is pleased to support it.

The raffle is expected to be launched in one week’s time, with the drawing set for June 25 during the team’s Family Fun Day fundraising event.

The Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Federation invited the team to visit over the May 28-30 weekend to train and play on their artificial turf, a critical segment of training for players preparing for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games, where competitions will be held on artificial turf.

The team usually utilises the grassy surface of the cricket grounds but due to the rainy season they have been forced to train indoors on the concrete surface at the national gymnasium. Though this has been a bit of a setback, the concrete surface is similar to the artificial turf.

While in Trinidad the team is expected to train in the mornings and play matches against Trinidad selections in the evening. Trinidad, who will also be contesting the CAC Games, is ranked number one for the tournament while Guyana is ranked at number eight from as many teams.
