Charlestown man, 82, injured in hit and run

An elderly man suffered a broken leg after he was struck down on Thursday evening on Sussex Street, Charlestown while going to the La Penitence Market.

Charles McPherson, 82, left his Ketley Street, Charlestown home minutes before 7pm to meet a friend at the nearby market.

The man, from his hospital bed, explained that before reaching there, he decided to stop at a nearby Banks DIH outlet where he purchased an ice-cream cone before continuing his walk.

He indicated that he is unable to recall anything further but was informed of reports of a motorcycle knocking him down.

McPherson said that at the Georgetown Public Hospital on the night of the incident, he regained consciousness but could not identify himself or recall his address until yesterday.

The battered man related that he sustained lacerations to his head and face in addition to the broken leg. He has since undergone surgery and is nursing his wounds in the male surgical ward.

The motorcyclist involved in the accident is still unknown to the victim and relatives are seeking to be informed of the man’s whereabouts.
