A glorious lily

Gloriosa rothschildiana is better known in these parts as the Gloriosa lily, or the Glory lily. It originates from Kenya and Uganda in Africa, however, there are other species of this plant which come from tropical Asia.

The feature for which this lily is best known is the striking colour of its flower. The plant is a climber, and has tuberous roots, dark green leaves and dramatic flowers with curved petals of crimson at the top and gold towards the base. The Glory lily can flower any time.

In many countries Gloriosa lilies are grown for the cut flower trade.  The flowers are usually 3-4 inches in diameter and just a few stems can make a stunning display.

The Gloriosa lily is a fast-climbing plant with delicate stems and must be supported by a trellis or canes.  It can be grown from tubers in well-drained soil. It should be fertilized with Miracle Gro All Purpose once per week.

I must mention that my Gloriosa lily survived the 2005 floods, although it was covered with water for more than  a week.  All the leaves turned yellow and I thought this was the end.  I trimmed it down, thinking that the tuber must have root rot, and for months there was nothing.  Then about three months later it came right up back and is still going.  At present it is in full bloom and has been so for months.

Until nest week, Happy Gardening!
