Confessed thief pleads to go to jail

A man, who admitted to stealing a quantity of items from the Roti Plus Restaurant on Sheriff Street, was yesterday sentenced to nine months imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The facts stated that between September 1 and 2, Kassan Khan, 45, broke and entered the restaurant and stole a quantity of knives, eggs, a pack of steel wool, and paint, all totalling $27,000 and the property of Mohadeo Ruplall.

When Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry asked Khan what he had to say, he pleaded with her to send him to prison. He said that he needed money and that he had no place to stay and lived on the streets. Subsequently, the magistrate handed down a custodial penalty of nine months  imprisonment.
