Jamaica, Cuba win again to remain on course for showdown

KINGSTON, Jamaica,  CMC – Jamaica won their second straight game but Antigua and Barbuda continued to struggle with another loss, in Group B of the Caribbean Football Union Men’s Under-20 finals here Thursday.

Playing at the Stadium East Sports Complex, the young Reggae Boyz trounced Suriname 3-0 in the feature game while Cuba easily got past Antigua and Barbuda in the other game of the doubleheader.

Both Jamaica and Cuba top the group with six points from their victories while Suriname and Antigua and Barbuda lie rock bottom.

Jamaica were kept scoreless until the brink of half-time when Sean McFarlane got on the scoresheet to send the hosts into the break up 1-0.

Again, Jamaica were not allowed to have things all their own way and had to wait until 20 minutes after resumption to double their lead through Zhelano Barnes.

His strike effectively put the result out of Suriname’s favour but Jamaica put an exclamation mark on the outing when Kereen Manning netted in the third minute of added time.

Cuba, meanwhile, found themselves frustrated by the Antiguans in the first half and it was not until the 81st minute that Andy Vaquero Ruiz put them ahead.

Yordan Santa Cruz Vera doubled Cuba’s advantage in the second minute of extra time to ensure there was not late comeback.

Today, Jamaica clash with Cuba for sole leadership of the group while Suriname and Antigua and Barbuda lock horns as they chase their first points.
