Ministry seeks special court days for environmental cases

The Ministry of Natural Resources is working to have special court days scheduled to deal with environmental cases, such as reckless garbage disposal.

Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud said the ministry is currently in talks with the judiciary about regulations that have been drafted to tackle irresponsible garbage disposal and to schedule times to deal with environmental matters, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.

It said too that it is working to have special court days timetabled at the level of the Magistrates’ court to expedite environmental matters.

“We have shared these regulations with the Office of the Chancellor so that we can have some sort of support from the judiciary in allowing us to enforce these new regulations…once we get that feedback, we will move very quickly in terms of implementation,” Minister Robert Persaud said. The goal is to have a smooth process in place when the ticketing system is implemented and wardens are on board.

The ministry is engaging other stakeholders, including civil society, in an effort to refine the national plan and come up with a more collective and holistic approach to deal with garbage disposal. Persaud also noted that the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development and other agencies like the Georgetown Mayor and City Council have a critical role to play.

This initiative is part of the wider ‘Pick it up’ campaign which has been taken across the country.

The campaign has made use of billboards and posters, public service announcements and has held clean-up exercises.

However, illegal dumping continues in and around the city unabated.
