Elderly in long lines at post offices for pension

The three clerks on duty were no match for the throngs of pensioners who lined up at the Georgetown Post Office Corporation yesterday.

Scores of old-age pensioners and senior citizens around Georgetown endured hours of suffering in long lines at various Post Offices yesterday. One pensioner who was waiting at GPO for a while said that there needed to be more persons working at the counters. “I can’t see how is only three of them they put to look after this long line.”

The line was out of the door when Stabroek News visited the post office and a large number of senior citizens waited patiently for hours. There was no adequate seating and many persons were complaining about the boiling temperatures.

At the Campbellville post office it was a similar situation as persons were frustrated about the long wait they had to endure.  “I deh here long to collect this little money and I don’t know why the process is so slow”, one pensioner said.

A Partnership for National Unity recently slammed various agencies for not having old age pensions ready on Saturday last. APNU had stated in a press statement that already poor and suffering old age pensioners braved inclement weather on Saturday and visited post offices to collect the  sum which is due to be paid on the first of every month. However, they were told that post offices had no money to pay pensions and that they should return yesterday.
