A man was yesterday sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after he was found guilty of armed robbery by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
Osman Brummell of Lot 63 Cross Street, Werk-En-Rust, made his first appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on April 4 after it was alleged that on April 2, while being armed with an ice pick, he robbed Ray Simons of a gold band, gold chain and a BlackBerry cellphone valued $179,000 and also unlawfully assaulted Simons causing actual bodily harm.
At the time of his first appearance, he pleaded not the charges against him and he was placed on $150,000 bail.
The facts at the time of his arraignment stated that on April 2, Simons and his cousin came to Georgetown from Mahaica and went to Club Monaco located at Sheriff Street. At the time, Simons was wearing his gold jewellery and was also carrying his cell phone.
It was related that around 1.30 am, Simons and his cousin went to Albouystown and observed that they were being followed by the defendant and another person. Simons subsequently removed his jewellery and placed it in his pants’ pocket. His cousin was then attacked but managed to free himself, while Simons was dealt four stabs to his abdomen with an ice pick and his belongings were stolen.
The matter was then investigated and the police arrested and charged Simons and Dino Giddings of Soesdyke, Linden Highway. However, Giddings was found not guilty on September 13, because the court was doubtful of his identity in relation to the crime committed.
