The Guysuco Training Centre/Port Mourant (GTC/PM) volleyball club recently returned from Suriname beaten not broken in failing to win the Yellowbirds Volleyball Club’s 50th anniversary volleyball tournament in Paramaribo.
According to a press release, the team was placed in the `Group of Death’ from the inception and, as a result, failed to qualify from the difficult assemblage although the team gave a good account of itself pushing their better prepared antagonists in every encounter.
Colloquially called TC, the team opened up their title aspirations against Suriname’s Yellowbirds and went down 2-1 in a three set humdinger.
The team battled back from one set down to take the second set in brilliant fashion but heartbreak was incurred when the team fell agonizingly short in their pursuit of glory as they were defeated in the third set.
Yellowbirds won 11-15, 15-13.
Even in defeat there were positives in the form of great plays from the TC players one of whom IGG Captain Creston Rodney was singled out as player of the match for his versatile demonstration in service, blocks, spikes and good defence.
The team’s next fixture was against Lyzecks and while TC lost in straight games 13-15, 13-15 there were standout performances from Creston Rodney and Quacy Matterson.
According to the release, while the Dutch teams were better prepared, TC gave a commendable showing and was heavily supported by the Dutch fans p for their resilience and fighting spirit.
TC’s next showing will be on March 10 when the club will host its fund-raising competition for teams in Berbice to aid its trip to Trinidad schedule for the Easter Weekend.
