Gilkes scores brilliant goal to send Back Circle packing

East Coast champions Plaisance edged tournament heavyweights Back Circle 1-0 Friday night as the Guinness Greatest of the Streets National Championships commenced at the Demerara Park Tarmac (Banks DIH Parking Lot), Industrial Estate.

Warren Gilkes scored the game winner in the 23rd minute with a stunner which silenced the partisan crowd by its sheer brilliance.

Upon intercepting the ball at the half-way line, the mercurial forward unleashed a ferocious strike with his favoured left foot which crashed into the back of the goal and sealed the unlikely win.

In other results, Georgetown champions Leopold Street, through an Okeene Fraser sixth minute effort, edged Hardcore of Bartica 1-0 whilst Silent Assassins of Linden needled Bartica winners Millenium 2-1.

Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Vice President of Competitions and former national player Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules netted a double in the seventh and 14th minutes for the Linden unit while Jermin Christian was on target for Millenium in the 19th minute.

Linden champions Silver Bullets defeated East Coast’s Victoria Church Yard United 2-1 on penalty kicks after regulation time was unable to separate the two sides, concluding the second round.

In the first round, Victoria Church Yard United defeated Leopold Street 2-0 through second half conversions from Ryan Morrison and Keron Simon in the 13th and 16th minutes respectively.

Back Circle dismantled Millenium 3-0 with Andy Duke netting a double in the sixth and ninth minutes after Wayne Wilson opened the scoring for the East Ruimveldt side in the fourth minute. Silent Assassins overcame Plaisance 3-2 on penalty kicks after normal time was unable to produce a winner. The evergreen Hercules opened the scoring for Silent Assassins in the third minute before Kester Green leveled proceedings for Plaisance in the seventh minute.

Silver Bullets defeated Hardcore 3-1 through goals from Nigel Bennette, Robin Adams and Tony Gilbert in the fifth, 11th and 25th minutes respectively. Andrade Stoby found the net for Hardcore in the 14th minute.

Action continues today at the same venue with six fixtures beginning at 8pm.
