Tourism awareness essay competition

The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) has announced that it is hosting a Tourism Awareness Month Essay Competition for primary and secondary school students.

The theme of the essay will be the new tag line for Brand Guyana that will be launched at the Tourism Awareness Month Ceremony hosted by the Tourism Ministry and the Guyana Tourism Authority, a press release said.

Primary school entrants are required to submit 1000-1500 words while secondary school students must make submissions of 1500-2000 words. All entries must be submitted on or before Wednesday November 12 by email to execdir@exploreguyana. org

The judges are Ruel Johnson and Sharon Maas, authors; Dr Steve Surujbally, chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission and Andrea de Caires, Vice President of THAG and director of Karanambo Lodge. The essays will be judged based on the following criteria: creativity – 30%; structure – 20%; adherence to topic – 20%; grammar – 10%; ‘Wow’ factor – 20% all for a total of 100%.

THAG will launch its 2015 edition of Explore Guyana magazine on November 20. The winners of the two categories of the competition will also be announced during the launching ceremony. The winning essay will be published in the 2016 edition of Explore Guyana – the official guide to Guyana. Winners will be awarded visits to Kaieteur Falls and weekend trips to the Rupununi and Essequibo River resorts.

According to the group, the essay competition is one of several events it will be launching during the ‘Month of Tourism Awareness.’ It will also be introducing a number of other initiatives intended to promote tourism and bring benefits to its membership. THAG will be running advertisements in the weekend newspapers with the new Guyana brand advising of the competition and rules for participation.
