Plaisance crowned u-23 basketball champs

Plaisance were crowned the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club’s Open u-23 Five-a-Side tourney champs, squeaking past Eagles by a 23-21 score line on Sunday at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.

Nikkoloi Smith was the architect of the East Coast of Demerara unit’s narrow win, as he shot his way to a match high nine points.

Leading the losers with eight points was Rolston Richmond. With the win, Plaisance walked away with the $50,000 first prize.

Eagles for their showing collected the runners-up prize of $35,000. In the slated third place playoff, Colts defeated home side and tourney hosts Pepsi Sonic via walkover to claim the $10,000 prize.

Plaisance would then complete a sweep of the events as N. Smith won the three-point shooting contest. For his individual sharp shooting, Smith received the victor’s prize of $10,000.
