Guinness Greatest of the Streets…Defending champs lose to West Back Road

Defending National and Georgetown champions, Queen Street Tiger Bay began their title defence in the worst possible manner, losing to West Back Road 2-0 when the Guinness Greatest of the Streets Georgetown edition continued on Sunday.

Akeem Fitzpatrick opened the scoring for the winners at the Demerara Park Parking Lot facility, slotting his right-footed effort into the empty net in the ninth minute from the centre of the field.

The unlikely group-H win would then be sealed in the 13th minute compliments of a Jamal Haynes strike into the left-hand corner.

In the final matchup of the evening, Albouystown-B overcame South Sophia by a 2-1 margin in their group-A affair. Dwayne Lowe gave South Sophia the early lead in the sixth minute with a first time shot into the net after receiving a left-sided pass on the right side of the field.

Albouystown-B would quickly respond one minute later through a left-sided Marlon Nedd effort down the centre of the net.

Roy Cassou would then find the go-ahead winner in the 14th minute for Albouystown-B with a clinical strike down the centre of the goal, after being in a one-on-one situation with the final defender in the centre of the field.

The evening would begin on a poor note for the Sophia units as Festival City Warriors downed North Sophia 2-1. Daniel Favourite netted the opener for the Warriors in the eighth minute with a simple finish down the centre of the net, after receiving a left-sided pass on the right side.

The Warriors should have doubled their lead in the 12th minute as they were awarded a penalty kick attempt after the final North Sophia defender was struck by a shot attempt inside the foul area.

Festival City would fail to capitalize on the spot-kick as Favourite missed his attempt from the halfway mark narrowly to the left. North Sophia would quickly capitalize on their recent fortune as Leron Jones netted the goal of the tourney to date seconds later to level the scores.

Racing down the left wing, Jones upon receiving a lobbed right-sided cross, guided his headed effort over the final defender Solomon Austin and into the centre of the goal.

However, that would be the closest North Sophia would get to overturning the result as  Favourite repaid for his earlier miss, stabbing his effort into the left corner following a goal mouth scramble in the 17th minute, to seal the group-C fixture.

In the fourth affair, former winners, Hope Street Tiger Bay placed all the other teams on notice by dismantling D’urban Street 4-0 in their group-D match.

Dwayne Dickson began the demolition in the ninth minute with a penalty kick conversion after the final D’urban Street defender was struck by a shot within the penalty area.

Stephon Moore would then make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute with a first time finish down the middle of the goal, after collecting a right-sided pass.

Things would go from bad to worse for D’urban Street one minute onward as an attempted pass deflected off the leg of a D’urban player and rolled into the back of the net.

The win would then be sealed in the 24th minute as Pierre Bobb scored, dribbling past the final defender upon cutting in from the right side of the field, before finishing down the centre of the goal.

In other results, West Front Road-Gold is Money defeated Cross Street 1-0 in their group-F showdown compliments of a Randolph Wagner fourth-minute effort.

The seventh matchup saw Broad Street Bullies edging Riverview 2-0 on penalty kicks after normal time finished 0-0 in their group-B fixture while Globe Yard brushed aside Adelaide Street Charlestown 2-0.
