Blackouts return to Essequibo

Dear Editor,

Blackouts have returned to cripple the entire Essequibo Coast. Just a few days ago the entire region was hit by a 9½ hour power outrage causing all industrial operations to cease and the intake of farmers’ paddy at all the mills to slow up. On the night of March 28 around 9 pm the blackout came back again and hit the entire coast lasting until 11.30 pm. The power plant at Anna Regina has not been living up to our expectations for the longest while, and is the cause of low production. And low production is a cause of our poverty.

The way blackouts play out on this coast is quite different from other parts of the country where power supplies are far more reliable. I am wondering if this blackout continues, what will happen to the ambitious cereal factory when it starts to operate, and to its 200 expected employees.

The power infrastructure at Anna Regina is not capable of providing the reliable power supply that government takes for granted.

Yours faithfully,

Mohamed Khan
