Vishaul `Cheesy’ Singh cracked his third First-Class hundred and his second this season, to help power the Guyana Jaguars to a first innings 337 against visitors Barbados Pride who were 60-4 when day two of the 3rd Round WICB/PCL Regional 4-Day match ended yesterday at Providence, Guyana.
The 26-year-old Singh, followed up his career-best 150 against the Leewards in the last round, with a stylish 121 from 241 balls with 14 fours scoring all around the ground during his 300-plus minute stay at the crease.
Captain Leon Johnson struck nine fours and two sixes in his 74 while Assad Fudadin (42), Barbadian all-rounder Raymon Reifer (32) and Shimron Hetmyer (24) played good knocks in the first innings.
At stumps, Barbados Pride were trailing the Jaguars by 277 runs as they enter day three with Rolston Chase (12) and wicket-keeper Mario Rampersaud (5) resuming their innings today. During the chase, Barbados lost Kemar Brathwaite (11) caught behind by Anthony Bramble and Kyle Corbin (16), stumped both off Veerasammy Permaul’s (2-24) bowling.
Fast-bowler Ronsford Beaton (1-15) found the edge of West Indies left-hander Johnathan Carter’s bat who was caught by the wicketkeeper while left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (1-10) joined the action and picked up the big wicket of the in-form Shamarh Brooks (09), who was the third batsman to be caught behind, minutes before stumps.
Off-spinners Chase (2-28) and Ashley Nurse (2-77), left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn (2-63) and Barbados skipper Kevin Stoute (3-40), did most of the damage on day two, collecting the last five Guyanese wickets for just 35 runs.
Resuming on 170-2, Johnson, who was the mainstay of the Jaguars batting on the rain-affected first day, added just one run to his overnight tally before he was undone by a good ball from fast-bowler
Miguel Cummings (1-55) and was caught by Benn at slip. Senior middle-order batsman Shiv Chanderpaul fell cheaply to Nurse and was out caught behind by wicket-keeper Mario Rampersaud for a 50-ball 11.
Singh resumed his overnight innings on 30 and shrugged off the passing of his two partners as he reached 50 off 114 balls with five fours.
Reifer was aggressive towards his fellow Bajans, smacking six fours as he helped take the pressure off Singh during their stay at the crease.
The two left-handers took Guyana to 262-4 from 39 overs with Singh 13
Runs away from his hundred and Reifer on 22 at lunch. When play resumed, Singh took his score to 99 with a boundary before reaching century number three with a nudge through the deep backward-point region off Tino Best, receiving a standing ovations from the sprinkling of spectators in the Red Stand and also from his teammates in the dugout.
The 300 for Guyana came with a booming drive which complemented two previous boundaries struck off Stoute’s over. Chase broke the partnership when Reifer was beaten by the flight and was knocked over after duly supporting the centurion.
Stoute pulled things back for his team with three quick wickets; first Bramble (07) hooked a bouncer into the gloves of the wicket-keeper who took a brilliant catch, running to a short fine-leg area, Singh then edged a delivery and was caught by the ‘keeper Rampersaud who took his third catch of the innings.
Permaul (00) was caught by Nurse in slip while Steven Jacobs (07) was put down by the off-spinner Chase off his own bowling but succumbed to the same bowler a few deliveries later, caught at short-leg by Corbin.
Benn wrapped up the innings by removing Beaton for 11 at the stroke of tea.
The match continues today at 9:30hrs.
