$30M up for grabs at 10th Guyana Cup

In excess of $30M will be up for grabs when the Port Mourant Turf Club in Collaboration with Jumbo Jet Auto Sales presents the 10th Guyana Cup on August 14.

Nine races are carded for the event which according to one of the organizers, Compton Sancho will be the biggest horse racing meet in the nation’s history.

Testament to Sancho’s opinion, a record $4M will go to the stable owners of the winner of the feature race (A& Lower1800m) race. The second prize will be $2M while the third prize stable will pocket $1M.

Big names will compete at ‘Big Yard’ when activities get underway from noon.

According to Sancho, steeds like King’s Knight, Scores Even and 2014/2015 winner of the Guyana Cup, CP Got Even will be in the starting gate.

During the launch of the event yesterday at Jumbo Jet’s city office on Smyth Street, Nazrudeen (Jumbo Jet) Mohamed Jr. disclosed that champion race horses from Canada, Trinidad, Jamaica and neighbouring Suriname will also form part of the cavalry.

Mohamed also disclosed that admission is set at $2000, but children under 12 will be admitted without a charge. Parking and programmes will also be free.

Meanwhile, Director of Sport, Chris Jones noted that the Guyana Cup is being supported by government since it is “an economic plus for the nation and fosters social cohesion.” Jones reiterated that persons from all ethnic backgrounds support the fixture.
