Dear Editor,
It is now five days since the deadly events in Linden, in which three men were shot dead by the police during a day of community protest.
Dear Editor,
The most important terms of reference for the investigation into the Linden police shootings must be that it should be (1) led by external and objective officials; (2) selected by joint agreement between the government and the parliamentary opposition (and this must include the AFC); and (3) granted subpoena powers to summon witnesses and take testimony under oath.
Dear Editor,
I have no illusion, no singular revelation, no special moment of truth, but a steady accumulation of a thousand slights, a thousand indignities, a thousand hurting moments as a resident and leader of God‘s people in Region 10 producing in me an anger, a rebelliousness, a desire to see a system that divides people by reason of race defeated, and a desire to resist a system that has imprisoned the people of Region 10.
Dear Editor,
Regarding (letters in SN) President Donald Ramotar’s cricket comment in his Caricom speech about the West Indies Cricket Board taking international matches to Florida instead of utilizing facilities developed by regional governments to benefit their own territories, the President is not in tune with the views of diaspora lovers of cricket in North America.
Dear Editor,
Last year a young man whom I knew from childhood who left Guyana in his early teens and went to live in the United States of America with his family, distinguished himself by becoming an international lawyer.
Dear Editor,
I would like to join with the rest of Guyana in expressing heartfelt condolences to the families and relatives who lost their loved ones during the recent shooting spree at a peaceful picketing exercise in Linden.
Dear Editor,
Ron Somerset, Shemroy Bouyea and Ivan Lewis are now martyrs to Guyana’s version of independent and republican democracy.
Dear Editor,
I had previously refrained from commenting on the allegations, indeed arguments and counter-arguments, about the apparent conflict of interest involving the Minister of Finance and his wife, Mrs Geetanjali Singh from the Audit Office.
Dear Editor,
As a Linden layperson and an ex-Linmine pensioner, I’m tired of hearing about the subsidies that the goverment has been giving to Linden to make up the cost of their electricity tariffs.
Dear Editor,
I must commend the effort by the government, most especially Minister Robert Persaud and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) for imposing a temporary halt on the granting of new licences for river mining.
Dear Editor,
‘Apology as Chairman of the Board stands‘ refers (SN, July 21).
Dear Editor,
The Region Two Management Committee is very concerned that after the National and Regional Elections, neither the Leader, the Chairman or any member of the National Management Committee has seen it fit to visit this region, despite several requests made by us, and promises that visits would be made.
Dear Editor,
It is with deep concern that I condemn the killing of Guyanese citizens at Linden, who were engaged in protest activities against a very steep increase in their electricity rates, by the Guyana Police Force.
Dear Editor,
As a born-and-bred Lindener, I register my heartfelt condolences to fellow Lindeners who mourn the ‘July 18 Linden Martyrs,’ and express my profound outrage at the corrupt PPP government and the equally corrupt Guyana Police Force – two peas in a pod.
Dear Editor,
Even as I extend heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those who were injured and died in Linden in the ongoing protest, I would like to point out that this situation is a reflection of the poor leadership of those who advertise themselves as leaders and representatives of the region.
Dear Editor,
We write in relation to the UN press release on the meetings of the Committee on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on July 10, 2012, at which the Guyana Government’s periodic reports were presented and discussed.
Dear Editor,
I pen this letter to register my disappointment at the misrepresentation of an interview that I gave to the Stabroek News which implied in its Sunday, July 15, 2012 report that I sought to justify the opinions expressed in a letter and by extension the Guyana Chronicle editorial of July 2 for which I had earlier offered an apology.
Dear Editor,
Allow me first of all to express my sympathy and condolences to the fellow Guyanese who were either killed or injured during last Thursday’s peaceful demonstrations in Linden.
Dear Editor,
On any given day as one travels from Beterverwagting to Georgetown, one is apt to encounter obstacles to the smooth flow of traffic, such as packs of dogs, herds of cows, droves of asses or herds of horses.
Dear Editor,
Now that it is clear that the standard procedures were not used to confront what was an obviously peaceful protest at Linden, no stone must be left unturned in the pursuit of clarity and the implementation of justice.
