Man shot dead behind Brickdam police station

Relatives of a man whose own sister described as “a junkie” (drug addict) are claiming he was shot dead by police, after he was found in the Teaching Service Commission building on Brickdam early Sunday morning.

Ryan Richards of Breda and Leopold streets died early Sunday morning after being admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation with gunshot wounds. He had been released from Brickdam prison only last Monday after being held in connection with the offences of break and entry and larceny.

A release from the police said they are investigating the death of the 29-year-old Richards who was found in the vicinity of Farley Gas Station, behind the Brickdam Police Station at about 2:45 am on Sunday.

The police said the man appeared to have sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and left eye and he was taken to the hospital by the police but subsequently succumbed.

The man’s sister, Jacqueline Lagnah told Stabroek News yesterday that her brother had lived a “terrible life.” For the past 15 years or so her brother had been on the wayward side and she described him as a “junkie”, hooked on cocaine.

According to Lagnah, her brother was last seen at 9:00 pm on Saturday. The next time he was seen, he was lying on the street not far from his home with two gunshot wounds.

She said she was asleep at the time of her brother’s death and was woken by someone telling her he had been shot.

A resident of the area said after the man was shot, he assisted in taking him to the hospital in a police car. Both the resident and the man’s sister claimed that he had been found in the TSC building, which he would have broken into, and was being beaten by the police when he managed to escape. They said it was while the man was running in the direction of his home that he was shot twice by the police.

Lagnah said when she visited the hospital the doctor said her brother was going to pull through once he received blood. She said the doctor gave her a sample of the blood and told her to visit the blood bank.

But when she returned yesterday morning she was told that the young man had died. Richards has left to mourn his three sisters and four brothers along with other relatives.
