One busy officer

Dear Editor,

I was in Guyana for the holidays and one of my relatives took me to the GTM Office at Skeldon Berbice to renew his insurance. The office was filled, all the chairs were occupied and yet still quite a few were standing. Behind the counter was a beautiful woman, she was working all alone, she greeted us with a warm smile on her face and said to us “just now.” I watched with amazement the way this lady was going about her job, she was typing on a typewriter, then she moved from one computer to the next, then she attended to the counter.

There are six desks, one typewriter and two computers with just one staff member working on all of this.

My relative said to me that he was in the office in September, 2006 and November, 2006 and again in January, 2007 and there was only one staff member. He also said to me that this woman has been with GTM for quite a long time.

Yours faithfully,

Marvin Harvey

Editor’s note

We sent a copy of this letter to GTM for any comments they may wish to make and received the following response from Mr Edward A. Persico, Com-pany Secretary/Human Re-sources Manager:

“GTM’s policy is to employ at least two staff members at each of its outlying offices except at the Bagotstown Sub-Office where only one staff is employed.

At our Corriverton Office, to which we assume the writer refers, one member of staff had tendered his resignation effective 13th November, 2006. This vacancy was recently filled.

We nevertheless commend the Supervisor of this office for her efforts during the period mentioned.”
