Accused in cane-cutter murder remanded

Magistrate Chandra Sohan remanded to prison two men accused of murdering a cane-cutter when they appeared on Tuesday before him to answer to the charges at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.

According to the facts of the case Rakesh `Dhanny’ Koonchalama, 28, and Anand `Long-Short’ Singh, 35, of Number 65 Village, on January 3, on the beach at Number 64 Village, allegedly murdered Kosal Ramawad. Ramawad had gone to the beach to fish and while there he was engaged in a confrontation with Koonchalama, his brother-in-law, who had accused him of “ill-treating” his wife.

Koonchalama reportedly choked Ramawad and when he fell face down to the ground he dealt him a fatal blow behind his neck with a stick. Stabroek News understands that Singh, Koonchalama’s uncle, helped him to bury the body. The following day Koonchalama dug up the body and threw it into a ditch. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Fazil Karimbaksh opposed bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.
