I am the owner of a Route 32 mini bus – working GT to Parika.
My mini-bus has a name on the front wind-screen, not more than 6 inches in width. Also at the bottom of the bus on both sides, it carries a name occupying 7 inches in width and 60 inches in length.
However, there is a traffic campaign going on presently by the traffic department of West Demerara on mini-buses only, for the removal of all names.
My questions are as follows:
(i) Why only on mini-buses and not hire cars, private cars, trucks and vans?
(ii) (ii) Why only Route 31 and 32 buses? Is it that they fall under different traffic laws or is it an eye pass? There are a lot of Routes 42, 44, 40, 41, 45, 63,63A and 50 zone mini-buses with names on them.
The traffic department claimed that only the word ‘Toyota’ should now be on mini-buses, but it doesn’t make any sense to me or the general public. I see a name as a main means of identity if there is any road mishap, for example hit and run. It would be easier to identify a mini- bus by its name in such instance.
Even in 1848 the railway services first six locomotive engines had names which were the Mosquito, the Firefly, and the Sandfly, the Centipede, the Scorpion and the Marabunta.
It costs not less than $10,000 to put names on the mini buses. I think the Guyana Police Force should find something more constructive to do.
