Two men yesterday robbed businesswoman Zabeeda Azeez of $12,000 in cash and jewellery at Lot 55 Stanleytown New Amsterdam Berbice and shot her son in the process.
Police said the woman was in the kitchen while her son, 28-year-old Rahim was tending to the business.
According to a police press release issued last night, the men, one of whom was armed with a handgun entered the premises and confronted Rahim who put up a fight. Police said Zabeeda, upon hearing the noise went to investigate and was also held up. The bandits shot Rahim in his left thigh and proceeded to rob the establishment. According to police, while fleeing the men shot and killed a dog which had attacked them.
Rahim is said to be in stable condition at the New Amsterdam Hospital. The family operates a grocery shop which is situated on the ground floor of their two-storey house and has an adjoining kitchen.
Police in Berbice are continuing their investigations.
