Special constable gets five years on drug charge

A Special Constable (SC) was yesterday sentenced to five years in prison and fined $30,000 for aiding and abetting the trafficking of three kilogrammes 236.5 grammes of cocaine back in July 2005.

The SC, Sandra Inniss, was at the time working at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri when she searched another woman and allowed her to pass with the said amount of drugs. An alert Custom Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) officer suspected that something was amiss and conducted another search on the woman at which time the drug was detected.

In sentencing Inniss yesterday at the Providence Magistrate’s Court the Magistrate told her that she was making her an example to others who want to gain riches through illegal means. Attorney-at-law, Abiola Wong, represented Inniss while Oswald Massiah presented CANU’s case.

According to the facts of the case on July 10, 2005, Nuddine Evans was an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan Airport, when she was found with the amount of drugs mentioned above. According to CANU, Evans on the said day went through the internal scanner and was first searched by Inniss who allowed her to pass through. Shortly after, a CANU officer nearby suspected that something was amiss in relation to the search conducted on Evans. The CANU officer conducted a further check on Evans and found the cocaine strapped to the woman on various parts of her body.

Evans was charged and pleaded not guilty but later changed her plea and was given one year’s statutory supervision.
