Accra completes sprint double

Athletes from around Guyana stormed the Police Developmental meet yesterday at the Police Sports Club ground ahead of the official start of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) 2007 season this weekend with an inter – club relay championships.

Police Progressive Club’s, Goddis Accra sprinted away with the 60m boys’ Under – 20 race edging long time rival Enmore’s Kenneth Semple while Police’s Kizan Brummel came in third.

Accra completed a double when he ran away from Lionel Pereira and Marlon Richards respectively to take the 150m boys Under – 20 title.

In the Under-15 version of the 60m race, Jared Canzius won the boys’ category while Lititia Myles won the girls’ event. Myles also won the 150m girls’ race while Canzius claimed the boys’ 150m crown to end with a double.

Ryan Caesar and Fabian Hall were second and third in the 60m boys’ race with Ebony Nelson and Renae Thom finishing in that order in the girls’ 60m race.

Tiffany Smith and Annis Mars were second and third in the 150m girls’ Under-15 race with Andrea Josiah and Chavez Agedah finishing second and third respectively in the boys’ 150 m race.

Jonna Graham won the 60m girls’ Under-13 event with Natoya Scott and Shenika Chapman finishing second and third respectively.

David Lonche came our on top of the 60m boys’ Under-13 event while Garfield DeRoche and Quinlon Nicquay trailed in second and third in that order. In the 150m boys’ Under-17 race, Royal’s Telston McKinnon won the event ahead of Dellon Deabreu and Sonnell Nelson with Corentyne’s Lavona Mckenzie out sprinted Shebeki Prince and Juanita Hooper to take the girls’ version. Rivals and one-time club-mates, Phillip Drayton and Afeez Samad met in the 600m boys’ Under – 20 race which Drayton won ahead of Samad with Mark Edwards finishing in third position.

Samad, off an excellent 2006 season, continued to suffer disappointment when he lost to underdog Upper Demerara athlete, Joel Saul in the 300m boys’ Under – 20 race. Edwards was third in that event as well.

Upper Demerara’s Michala Adams won the 300m girls’ Under – 15 race ahead of Tiffany Smith and Annis Mars respectively while Andre Josiah of New Amsterdam claimed the boys’ version of the race with counterpart Ryan Caesar and Royal’s Elton Bollers finishing second and third respectively. Dennis Horatio contin ued the dominance of the middle distance events when he left Cavlon Halley and Uroy Lavroux respectively behind to claim the 1600m boys’ Under – 20 race.

As customary in the events that they compete together, Alika Morgan and Leanna Doris were the only two athletes that battled it out with the former emerging on top of the 1600m girls’ Under-20 race.

Up until press time yesterday, the male and female categories of the long jump were not yet completed at the Rudolph Harper Long Jump Facility at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) ground.
