As a follow up to my letter captioned “The illegal crossing has been going on for years, Mr. Minister” (07.02.09) on the Corentyne River mishap I wish to ask that an answer be requested from the Minister of Home Affairs to the question, ‘will the illegal crossing of the Corentyne be allowed to continue?’
I am sure that the whole of Guyana knows of the ‘backtrack’ to Suriname but do we have to encourage an illegal act? Admittedly it is a faster way to get to Suriname but why have such an elaborate facility at the Moelson Creek while at the same time efforts are made to foster an illegal trade.
It has been the norm in Guyana for decades now–illegal business that the authorities turn a blind eye to because there is money in it. Take the ‘bottom-house’ rum shops and the infamous street dealers –in money and other property-leaving legitimate Cambio dealers to take a beating and facing all kinds of sanctions.
Is it not time to clean up our act? Can we not do more than talk of becoming like ‘America’? I say stop the illegal business now–all illegal business!
