Suriname man busted with submachine gun at illegal crossing

A Suriname resident who was attempting to enter Guyana via one of the backtrack routes located on the Corentyne was on Monday busted with a machine gun,  ammunition and a quantity of currency.

Police in a statement last evening said, that “Customs Law Enforcement Officers were on patrol duty at #79 Village Foreshore, Corriverton, Berbice. During the exercise they noticed a speed boat arrive from Suriname and land at Eno boat landing. Five passengers were on board the said boat”.

According to the police, the boat was intercepted and a search was conducted on the passengers when it was discovered that  a male, 26, unemployed of Zuelen, Paramaribo, Suriname, had one Beretta submachine gun with the number defaced, twenty-five live 9 mm ammunition, US$3,000 and $6,250 SRD.

The man was arrested and taken to the Springlands Police Station while the items were lodged An investigation has since been launched.
