Quartet remanded over Mash day murder

The four persons, including two teenagers, accused of killing a 30-year-old fisherman on Mashramani Day appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a joint murder charge and were remanded to prison.

Krishnasammy Darsammy, 24; Mahadeo Jairam, 19; Radesh Hardeo, 19, and Veerasammy Darsammy, 23, all of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara (WCD) were not required to plead to the capital offence of murder and were remanded to prison by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.

It is alleged that last Friday, Mashramani Day at Cornelia Ida, WCD, the quartet murdered Deonarine Bangat.

Reports are that on Mashramani Day, Bangat was at home trying to sleep when the quartet chased some dogs through the area making noise. He reportedly told them to be quiet and pelted them with a bottle, which hit one of them and broke. This apparently enraged them and they attacked him with pieces of wood, chasing him a short distance from his home. As a result of the blows he collapsed and relatives rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police were informed and the quartet comprising two brothers, their cousin and a friend were arrested.

The quartet will return to court on March 29 at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
