Demerara reach 159-4 after routing Essequibo for 91

Demerara ended the first day of the Castrol inter-county under-15 two-day cricket competition in a comfortable position after routing Essequibo for a paltry score at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, yesterday.

At the close of play Demerara were 159-4 after routing Essequibo for 91.

Essequibo, after losing the toss also lost opener Herrel Green who was bowled by Seon Daniels to start a steady procession to the GCC pavilion.

Melvin Seepersaud with 26 batting at eight was the top-scorer. He and last man Neal Ramalho (10 not out) put on the biggest partnership of the innings, 30 for the tenth wicket.

Skipper Devinder Mohabir, who batted at number six, tried to stem the tide but only managed 17.

The main wicket-takers for Demerara were leg-spinner Amir Khan who picked up 4-22 and skipper Carlos La Rose 2-7.

Demerara got a solid start of 61 from Shane Seebarran 29 and Vice-captain Shameer Fazal who, continued his consistent run of form with a well played 63 laced with six fours. Delon Fernandes and Fazal then put on 73 for the second wicket before Demerara suffered a couple of setbacks losing Dayanand Roopnarine and La Rose in quick succession late in the day to close at 159-4.

Fernandes is not out on 41. With him is Kevin Singh who is not out on one.

Earlier, Indranauth Haralsingh, marketing manager for Castrol in brief remarks prior to the start of the match said his company was pleased to be involved in cricket at the youth level and that they would definitely be back as sponsors next year.
