The Press Association should be concerned with the quality of journalism

Dear Editor,

Is the Guyana Press Association (GPA) looking for someone to blame for the poor quality of information the media produce?

The GPA claims in its press release captioned “GPA condemns President Jagdeo’s attack on the media”, that it’s the Government’s fault that the media is not in a position to produce high quality information.

Is it the Government’s fault that journalists demonstrate extreme partisanship in their expression of comments with no factual basis? Is it the government’s fault that the media don’t endeavour to eliminate distortion?

It is a journalist’s duty to seek out the truth, to understand and report issues from all possible angles and whether or not all facilities are in place to enable this. Unless this is understood, we cannot safely say we are moving forward.

The GPA’s time would be better spent on realizing the imminent danger in the work of journalists in an unprofessional media and addressing this instead of lashing out at the Government.

Yours faithfully,

Gary Adams
