Mother of three critical after hit by speeding bus

A mother of three is now in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital after receiving a hard hit to her head by a route 40 minibus on Aubrey Barker road last night.

The woman, June Ann James of 1731 Achievement Place, South Ruimveldt, was riding a scooter on her way home when the accident occurred. Her daughter who was the pillion rider, escaped without a scratch.

James sustained a deep wound in the middle of her forehead, relatives said.

Speaking with this newspaper at the hospital last evening, the child who was still in shock could not describe exactly where the accident occurred but was sure that it was “somewhere in South [Ruimveldt]”.

The child, who was still dressed in her school uniform and stood outside the hospital waiting to hear of her mother’s condition, told Stabroek News that she and her mother were on their way home and she remembered that the street was very busy with lots of traffic.

“So my mother tried to swerve away from the traffic and with the swerve she fall down and I can’t remember if I fall down and then get up because I was frighten,” the child said.

She said her mother seemed to be in a lot of pain because the bike had fallen on her legs. According to the child, no one had come to their rescue, but her mother was trying to get up even though the bike seemed to have hurt her legs.

“She was groaning in pain but was trying to get up,” she said. But she added that before her mother could have made it, a bus came from nowhere in a full speed and ran over her. She said both she and her mother were wearing helmets.

A hospital source has since said that it seemed as though the woman received a hard hit to her head and the vehicles wheels did not actually go over her head.

A woman who said she was on the scene of the accident said that the way the woman fell it was impossible for any driver who was paying attention to the road not to have seen her.

Last evening the child stood with her mother’s shoe in her hand as she awaited word on her mother’s condition.

Relatives also remained quiet as they too hoped for the best.
