Farmer remanded over boat theft

A 35-year-old farmer accused of stealing a boat was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Wales Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Chaitram Persaud of 455 Zeelugt North, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) was not required to plead to the charge of simple larceny and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.

It is alleged that between March 4 and 5 at Hogg Island, Essequibo River, Persaud stole the farm boat worth $300,000 the property of Kuntie Balram. Following police investigations he was arrested and charged.

Attorney-at-law Gloria Stephney entered an appearance for Persaud. In her submissions she stated that her client is 35 years old, lives at 455 Zeelugt North, EBE, is married and has been farming at Hogg Island for the past 15 years. She stated that Persaud is well known in the area and declared that he was not a flight risk. She asked for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum. Police Prosecutor Orin Cameron in response stated that the prosecution was opposing bail on the grounds that the police had a difficult time locating the defendant. He asked for Persaud to be in remand until the next court date.

After listening to the submissions the magistrate refused bail and transferred the matter to the Leonora Magistrate’s Court for next Tuesday.
