Eight-race horse race meet for Mocha Arcadia March 31

The Georgetown Turf Club (GTC) in its effort to promote sport tourism will be staging an eight-race horse race meet on March 31 at its Mocha Arcadia facility to coincide with the Cricket World Cup 2007 Super Eight matches which Guyana will be hosting.

According to a release, unlike staging race meets during the day time, this meet will be staged on the night of March 31, one of the rest days of the Super Eight matches.

The release quoted Minister of Tourism Manniran Prashad as saying Guyana was expecting an influx of over 25,000 visitors during the Super Eight matches and the GTC had to play its part in welcoming and entertaining the guests.

The Mocha Arcadia race track is located two miles from the Guyana National Stadium at Providence and four miles from Georgetown.

Eight races are carded and will involve horses bred locally as well as some that were bred in Trinidad and Tobago.

Among the horses expected to be on show are Getting Something, Laralee in Flight, Trini to de Bone, Va Va Voom, Little Panie, Spin & Squeeze, Fire Power and Brave Heart.

The feature event will see horses vying for top honours in a Class ‘C’ event over one mile for a $300,000 first prize money.

Three six-furlong races are also on the cards, one each for Class `G’ and `F’ and Lower, `I’ and `H’ and Lower and `L’ Class. There would also be two races over five furlongs, one for non-winners and the other for two-year-olds.

Two other one mile events will also be staged, one for `K’ and `J’ and the other for unclassified horses.

Interested race horse owners and trainers are asked to make contact with GTC’s president Michael Simms.
