Work underway at PC on defective water pump – classes to resume Monday

Work has started on the defective water pump which had halted the potable water supply at President’s College, causing students to stage a protest on Thursday.

Education Minister Shaik Baksh told Stabroek News that classes at the school will resume on Monday and work will continue until the problem is completely rectified.

Stabroek News understands that yesterday many of the remaining students went to their respective homes and an arrangement has been put in place for the school to be provided with water for four hours each day through a Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) line which supplies the neighbouring community.

This would continue until the pump at the school becomes operational.

The Ministry of Education had approved the suspension of classes at President’s College (PC) for two days following a protest by students over the unavailability of potable water as a result of a defective water pump.

The pump broke down over three weeks ago, before the start of the new school term. Students had complained to Stabroek News about this on September 20.

The Civil Defence Commission had been trucking water into the compound, but students had complained about the inadequacy and quality of water.

Close to 150 students, some of them in uniform, stood in the shade of a tree on the Public Road at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara Thursday morning and made their concerns known to the media. They also made use of placards to highlight the issue.
