Sugar protocol could end up in court

There is no guarantee that the six proposals by the Carib-bean to the EU to assure market access for sugar would be accepted, President Bharrat Jagdeo says and he added that regional leaders are keen to test the legality of the scrapped Sugar Protocol in court.

He is also supportive of the Sugar Protocol as a legal and binding document being tested in court and noted that all the Cariforum Heads of Government criticised its recent unilateral denunciation by the European Union (EU).

At a press conference he held at the Office of the President yesterday on the outcome of the meeting of Cariforum leaders with the EU trade and development commissioners in Montego Bay, Jamaica last Thursday and Friday, Jagdeo said that many of the Caricom Heads of Government have indicated that the matter of the Sugar Protocol should go to the court.

He said they agreed to continue the consultations on the issue and if they all agree to test the matter in court, then most likely it would end up in court. “I am prepared to join with others as a long term agreement that was concluded between Europe and the ACP. We will keep struggling to ensure that Europe is reminded of their commitments
