Alpha regains premiership lead

They had it, lost it, and now it’s back in their possession. For how long is anybody’s guess. Alpha United reclaimed the top position in the Georgetown Football Association Cellink Plus Premier League with a 1 nil victory over the Guyana Defense Force at the weekend. Leading the way for Alpha was Andrew Murray jr. who slipped one past the army goalkeeper seven minutes before the half.

GDF created numerous chances but failed to find the mark and slipped to a loss at a crucial stage of the championships.

Alpha, with four wins from eight matches, which includes one loss and three draws, now sit on top of the pile with fifteen points but are being chased by Pele and Fruta Conquerors who are only a digit behind. Fruta Conquerors cemented that share of the second position by beating Western Tiger 2-0 also on Sunday.

The two teams had battled to a nil all stalemate at the end of the first segment. It was not until the 75th that the dam broke and Delon Williams slotted home the game’s first goal past a hesitant Tigers goalkeeper Rolex Scott. Ten minutes later Jomo Hinds latched on to a cross that eluded Scott and hammered home the game’s second goal from close range.

Tigers, with the loss, are now stuck on 12 points with three wins and three draws. Meanwhile, in the first game of the day Buxton F.C. beat Georgetown Football Club 3-0 as play in the GFA Supligen Under 20 tournament continued.

For Buxton, Derrick Hatton with goals in the 20th and 50th minutes and Esan Hamer in the 75th minute were the goal scorers. The Cellink Plus Premier League continues on Friday at the GFC ground.
