City Basketball clubs prepare for GABA showdown

A last ditch effort by Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) president Chris Bowman to save himself and his executive from a no-confidence resolution might be too little too late. Several clubs are moving into high gear to ensure the ouster of the current President via a no-confidence motion that is presently being signed onto by various clubs. One club executive told Stabroek Sport yesterday that recent moves by Bowman to appoint several individuals to serve as on the Executive Committee would be swiftly put down.

Bowman yesterday told Stabroek Sport that he had appointed well known promoter and sport buff Kashif Muhammad, businessman Rayad Boyce and national player Kelvin Simon as new members on the Executive Committee. But when contacted yesterday, Muhammad, in a sharp rebuke, swatted down any appointment in his name. He said that Bowman contacted him about two weeks ago and asked if he would be willing to be part of the Georgetown executive in helping to raise the level of the sport in the city to which he replied in the affirmative. “But since then I have had no contact with Bowman and they have not told me anything so I know nothing about being elected or appointed. In fact, I am out of any such arrangement and will not be part of any such executive,” Muhammad bluntly told Stabroek Sport.

He added that as a sports lover he is always willing to help but will not be part of the current Executive given the prevailing circumstances.

This put down to Bowman’s claims has left the incumbent President in a quandary as he tries desperately to hold on to the seat of power even as moves are afoot to oust him. Efforts to contact Boyce and Simon were unsuccessful.

Nevertheless, Bowman is insistent on retaining control of city basketball and said the constitution that is being rejected by some clubs has been in place since 2005 and was ratified by all the clubs. Bowman has been enjoying a contentious relationship with several city clubs of late and even the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation whom he has been favoured over by the National Sports Commission to organize the basketball aspect of the Inter-Guiana Games which begin next Friday.
