Beaten Vergenoegen youth suffers relapse

A Vergenoegen youth who was the victim of a severe thrashing last month at the hands of his friends recently suffered a relapse and is back in hospital.

Indrajeet Dhaniram, 19, was reportedly beaten with a bicycle bar on September 20 by persons known to him, because he had stopped socializing after taking up a love interest. The young man was hospitalized for several days before being discharged but his condition took a turn for the worse on Monday last.

Sangeeta Dhaniram related last night that no one was ever charged for injuring her son. She said a report was lodged at the Leonora police station and that complaints were even made at Eve Leary but to date, “no justice”.

The woman told Stabroek News that her son works in Barbados and would return home occasionally. She said he was in Guyana for two weeks before the incident occurred. On the day in question he left home to change money and was confronted by the men while on his way back.

“He told me that they went on the backdam waiting for him and they ask why he ain’t hanging out and sporting anymore. When he answer they start to beat he and they strip he of the money”, the mother said.

According to her, the police initially arrested the perpetrators but released them shortly after. She said a story was then cooked up by her son’s attackers about how he fell from a verandah. This, she said, was taken as ‘gospel’ by persons in the community so when her son was discharged from hospital no one said anything about the beating.

Though he had appeared to be doing better, she said, the young man started vomiting, had a high fever and complained of a severe stomach ache. She took him back to the hospital and doctors immediately operated on him.

Dhaniram said her son had emergency surgery after being re-admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He is currently a patient there and according to her there is room for much improvement.

The woman said her son deserves justice because he was beaten severely. She said the boys who beat him up used to be his friends, and in the case of one, his best friend, but they grew apart.
