The post office must also set a dress code for its own staff

Dear Editor,

I have noted with interest the Post Office Corporation’s advertisements in the print media regarding code of dress for members of the public who visit that entity on business. While I find their posture very unusual, I will support it in the pursuit of higher standards, particularly considering the downward slide of standards in Guyana.

I had reason to transact business at the Enmore Post Office at about 8:00 am on Saturday October 13, 2007. The post mistress was manning the counter. This lady’s wear at work was a red T-shirt, which exposed most of her midriff, and a green woollen track pants tied tightly under her belly. It seemed to me that she had slept in the clothes. Certainly, her attire was not suitable for work.

In addition, her two children were running around in the area behind the counter. I took two pictures with my camera phone of the post mistress in her attire and, should she choose to deny what I claim herein, I will tender these pictures for public viewing.

So, while the post office is trying to encourage improvement, its own staff is practicing the opposite.

Yours faithfully,

S Singh
