Parents and Educators against mental challenges

Dear Editor,

Awareness of autism, a brain development disorder which is often confused with mental disorder, is gaining prominence globally. This disorder, a wide spectrum one, is however often manifested in mental and physical challenges.

Here in Guyana, the condition is not widely recognised and even in some cases, unheard of. A group of parents and teachers of autistic children and other interested persons have taken a stand to promote awareness with a view to helping to improve the lives of such children. They have formed an action committee called Parents and Educators against Mental Challenges.

It is hoped that this committee could attract the involvement of other parents, teachers and interested persons, in advancing the arrangements for institutionalising this body and furthering the advocacy agenda for affected persons: children and adults.

It is in this context that we are asking any parent who suspects or knows his/her child may be or is autistic, educators and other interested persons to contact the undersigned.

This is an important and critical initiative, and we do look forward to your participation.

Yours faithfully,
