Two of the country’s most lethal, offensive threats will go head-to-head tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall when the Courts Pacesetters and the Disciples of Plaisance meet in one of the most anticipated division three finals that Georgetown has seen in a while.
Coincidentally, both of these teams are overflowing with offensive talent, some of which were harvested from the championship team that made the country proud at the Inter Guiana games held earlier this year, which seemed to do wonders for the confidence of the young, enthusiastic players.
Travis Burnett of Pacesetters and Travis Stewart of the Disciples have distinguished themselves by being among the top-scorers of the competition and to add a dramatic element to tonight’s final these two stars will face each other for the first time.
History will show that these two players were once teammates about two years ago when Travis Burnett wore the Disciples logo on his back.
They sat on the same bench and practised in the Plaisance school-yard where both players honed their skills.
Though they may be familiar with each other’s game, the only similarity between the two, other than their first name is their unmatched aptitude for scoring.
Although the Pacesetters’ journey to the finals was a short one (having gained a walkover from the Grace Foundation in the first round), they wasted no time in establishing themselves as the team to beat in this tournament when they humbled a very talented Pepsi Sonics side.
Pacesetters started the game slowly but Burnett was very instrumental in helping them find their rhythm to put away the Sonics whose attempts at containing Burnett were mostly futile.
Burnett finished with a game-high 25 points and had warned then that his performance was just a preview of what could be expected in the final.
The Disciples, however, earned their spot in the final by getting past two competent sides in Eagles and Ravens.
Their victory over Ravens was achieved with a six-man squad. Stewart scored 25 points in each contest.
Pacesetters’ coach Robert Cadogan will be very confident since his roster has much depth.
The division three match up will most likely be decided by which team’s star is contained, or which Travis is less effective.
Game time for this one- game final is 7:30pm sharp and will be followed by game two of the division one final between the Nets and Ravens.
