Ministry urges councils to remove structures impeding drainage

The agriculture ministry says it is seeking the cooperation of all regional and neighbourhood democratic councils in removing all illegal structures that impede drainage in residential areas.

According to a press release the ministry and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) have been conducting routine monitoring of the drainage and irrigation systems in low-lying areas to ensure that all pumps and structures are functioning.

The ministry said it sought the councils’ cooperation after unauthorised structures impeded the flow of accumulated water, due to heavy rainfall, at Lusignan and Plaisance.

The ministry said in response to this situation the NDIA and relevant local government authorities including the Guyana Police Force will continue to work together to ensure that all illegal structures are removed.

Meanwhile, Minister Robert Persaud is appealing to all public-spirited persons for their cooperation during the rainy season to avoid the accumulation of water and to prevent the incidence of flooding.

Additionally, the ministry is reminding farmers and residents of low-lying areas that they can seek its advice by calling telephone numbers 223-7291, 226-6655, 227-5049, 227-2204 and 225-8310.
