The narcotics business continues to flourish

Dear Editor,

The recent discovery of another airstrip that may have been used to facilitate the burgeoning narco-business is not a surprise. Guyanese know a lot about the narco-business since it is a part of the economy and an established enterprise which employs a lot of people. The administration is interested in pursuing the little guys while the big boys are at liberty to socialise and carry on as usual. According to one letter writer, it is a lot more comfortable to relate to a drug dealer who owns a business and a bulldozer than one who rides a bicycle. This is very true in Guyana, look around and you can see government functionaries in the company of these entrepreneurs having a drink. Nothing new, it is part of the fabric .

It has become unbearable for the rank and file citizen to shoulder all the burdens that are the results of incompetence of the government. The PPP administration has not done anything tangible apart from providing those services that are the peoples birthright. It is time for another GUARD to come forth to open the eyes of the supporters of this impotent government. Like its predecessor, the current government has many ineffective ministers, several ministries have two ministers each. Now that the hardcore criminals are attacking the PPP supporters and in many instances killing them, it will be interesting to hear what the government has to say. The majority of the PPP supporters have a herd mentality, blindly supporting a government. They berate the government in private but when election time comes they blindly elect it again.

From independence in 1966 there has been little progress.

Yours faithfully,

Vijay Singh
