Apart from the Stabroek News a resounding silence on this matter

Dear Editor,

I note with interest the Minister’s arguments that he has been vilified by the Stabroek News. I also note the resounding silence from the government and other web-based media in Guyana. I remember a former reporter at the Guyana Chronicle speaking of the days when govern-ment officials would come to that newspaper’s editorial room and remove articles, intended for publication, which were critical of the then PNC government. Now I have to wonder what’s accounting for the deafening silence there?

To get back to the Minister, I found it interesting that while the Minister believed that he is being vilified and that the information was “distorted”, he has not denied the basic truth of the matter. To that extent, one wonders at the silence from your competitors (logically the places for him to offer an `explanation’ or to deliver the truth). Considering that this matter has been in the national arena for several weeks and the matter is yet to be addressed publicly by either the police or the government, can private citizens, under the constitution pursue any action to have him removed/step down pending a full investigation? Surely any responsible government or political group interested in creating and maintaining public trust would have taken some action, or pressured the Minister into taking a leave of absence or resigning pending the completion of the investigation?

Also, purely as a matter of curiosity, is it not customary for the firearm involved in an investigation to be impounded? Is this the case with the Minister?

Yours faithfully,

M Khan

Editor’s note

The firearm was requested and we assume has been handed in.
