The rivers in Guyana are sub-tributaries of the mighty Amazon

Dear Editor,

Some years back after doing some research. I found that all the rivers in Guyana are sub – tributaries of the ” Mighty Amazon ” hence when the Amazon is in its flooding season, which is now, since it is summer time in the Andes which is where the Amazon begins , it takes a month from the head before the waters reach the mouth of the Amazon where it deposits approximately three million tons of silt which is now on the shores of Guyana as a result of the ” Guyana current ” which flows from the east .

Because of this information I met with Messrs Alejandro Cedeno and Marc Forni, both of the World Bank in Washington DC in February of this year after it was reported in your daily that the President was preparing to ask the World Bank for a 20 million USD loan to dredge four rivers, a theory that is flawed. Simply put, what plans did the experts who were advising the President have to stem the flow of the oceans that is rising as I write this amidst the moon’s influence when it’s in ” full phase .” Did they ever consider that the very rivers would devastate the very banks of the rivers they were going to dredge?

Water has no shape or form , hence if it can’t go here it will certainly go there. Thus the impending fear of continuous flooding at this time of the year which is going to be more intense resulting from the deforestation of the Amazon basin, mostly by Brazilians who in their search for a livelihood are unsupervised in their quest for lands to farm , raise cattle , mine and log, all on a massive scale in the basin which is an ecological disaster for the Guiana Shield.,

Guyana is also a contributor albeit on a minor scale, so too is Suriname. Design will never have an impact on nature so it’s the duty of the administration , which does the business of the people to act intelligently to avoid the continued state of apprehension that will become overwhelming every year at this time. After 2005/6 this was discussed with the now Minister of Agriculture in his capacity of liaison officer to the President .

Earlier this year when I was in Guyana I tried to meet with him, instead he arranged for me to meet with the then irrigation chief, Ravi Narine , who told me during the discussion that he’s an engineer and not a politician, and that those who are will only listen to what they want to hear. This was his response when I asked him what plans he had as the chief of drainage and irrigation in the face of the facts as they are now in relation to the growing disaster of global warming, and the fact that Guyana is some 20′ below sea level, and that the nation will be in the middle as the tide rises, from the oceans and the tributaries of the mighty Amazon.

To all my brothers and sisters who have no way of getting out whether it’s this time or the next , in anticipation of the pending doom I send you wishes of hope for a happy Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year. May God Bless you all , don’t shoot the messenger please !

Yours faithfully,

Michael Tannassee
