Woman charged with perjury flees after accident -found in America St store

A female prisoner who was being escorted to the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday made a mad dash for freedom after the vehicle she was in collided with another on High Street.

A policewoman later found Onica Williams hiding in a store on America Street. Williams, who was recently charged with obstructing the course of justice, had darted wildly in and out of traffic while stripping off her clothes.

The accident occurred between Brickdam and Hadfield Street and as Williams fled from the scene, confusion ensued as persons ran behind her in a bid to find out what was happening, adding to the traffic congestion in front of the court. The woman ran along Avenue of the Republic then turned towards Demico House before running back onto Avenue of the Republic and into America Street with ranks, including those who were on duty at court, in hot pursuit.

A police source later divulged the woman’s name and the nature of her alleged crime.

The rank also said that Williams was the main eyewitness to a murder for which the trial was currently being heard in Court Six. The woman reportedly testified that she had fabricated her story and the magistrate charged her with perjury (lying on the witness stand).

Reports are that a female rank who joined the search found the escapee hiding in a store on America Street. By that time Williams had managed to change her blouse.

Williams was later escorted to the Magistrate’s Court lock-ups.
