The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently coordinated a tree labelling exercise for ten different types of trees along some popular city streets and is encouraging businesses to sponsor such exercises.
In a press release, the EPA said it collaborated with the Demerara Tobacco Company (DTC) and the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) in placing the labels that provide the scientific and common name of the trees along with their origin and other interesting features. The EPA said the aim of the exercise was to promote awareness of and appreciation for the trees in our environment and it was done in observance of World Environment Day.
The agency said labels were placed on trees along Main Street, Avenue of the Republic and Brickdam and it replaced temporary ones affixed to trees along Green Walk. At the end of the exercise participants conducted a quiz based on the information on the labels. The EPA said many of the trees that line the city streets came from different parts of the world and have interesting ecological, cultural and medical significance.
The EPA said the DTC sponsored the making of the labels as well as the other activities to mark the day and the M&CC assisted with the mounting exercise. The agency said it would serve citizens well if businesses were to take the initiative to sponsor labels for more trees.
