A Commissioner for Oaths

Dear Editor,

It is amazing how quickly language becomes corrupted. I read recently in the newspapers that Pandit Gossai was appointed a Commissioner of Oaths to Affidavits.

I am aware that a person may be appointed a Commissioner for Oaths to Affidavits. The appointment is for a purpose i.e. to administer oaths etc.

Section 96 (1) of the Evidence Act, Chapter 5:03 reads:

The President may issue to any Justice of the Peace or other fit person a commission empowering him to be a Commissioner to administer Oaths to affidavits, and to receive declarations and affirmations in lieu of oaths, and Statutory Declarations Act and to certify those affidavits, declarations, affirmations, or statutory declarations.

Yours faithfully,
