Chain snatcher run down by car

A man who was alleged to have snatched a chain from the neck of one of two foreigners on Church Street, Georgetown last night was later caught after a man who said that he is a policeman ran a car into him on Robb Street.

According to the driver he was at a telephone booth on Church Street when he saw the man snatch the chain from one of the foreigners and take off on his bicycle on Robb Street. He said being a policeman he sped off after the alleged thief in his white taxi attached to Ambassador Taxi Service with licence number HB 3887.

He caught up with the man in the vicinity of the Stabroek News office on Robb Street where he ran his vehicle into him, knocking the man off his bicycle. He again ran the car over the man, immobilized him and began slapping him about his face. Shortly after, two policemen arrived on the scene and they also joined in the assault on the alleged thief who by this time was lying on his back. One of the policemen ordered that he take off his clothing as they carried out a search on him but no chain was found. Police later escorted the man to the Brickdam Police Station where he was supposed to have had a confrontation with the victims.
